President Donald Trump is facing criticism after saying that the prices of groceries and many other everyday items are going down in the United States. Critics say many Americans are still paying more when they go shopping.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday night, Trump said that almost everything was becoming cheaper, with oil being one of the main exceptions. Earlier that same day, he also claimed that grocery prices had fallen significantly compared with when Joe Biden was president.

However, CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale challenged Trump’s claims. Dale said overall grocery prices were actually 3.4% higher than they were in January 2025. He also said that far more grocery products had increased in price than had become cheaper.

Dale shared examples of common supermarket products that had increased in price since Trump returned to the White House. His figures were used to argue that the situation facing shoppers was different from the picture Trump presented.

There are some products that have become cheaper. One example is eggs. Egg prices had risen sharply during the final months of the Biden administration, partly because of a bird flu outbreak that affected supplies.

Prices for eggs have since fallen. However, Dale said this did not mean grocery prices overall had fallen. According to him, most grocery products had actually become more expensive.

Dale also pointed out that grocery prices normally rise over time regardless of which political party controls the White House. His criticism was focused mainly on Trump’s claim that grocery prices as a whole had gone down.

The disagreement quickly attracted attention on social media, where critics responded to Trump’s comments by sharing their own concerns about the cost of shopping.

The issue of grocery prices remains important because Americans feel changes in food prices directly. Even relatively small increases can make a noticeable difference for families buying food every week, especially when several everyday products become more expensive at the same time.

Trump continues to argue that prices are moving in the right direction compared with the Biden years. His critics, however, say the available grocery-price figures do not support the broader claim that almost everything in supermarkets has become cheaper.
