President Donald Trump is showing clear frustration with the TV network ABC as his long-running dispute with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel continues to grow.
The 79-year-old president openly called on the network to remove Kimmel from television after a joke the comedian made about First Lady Melania Trump. In that joke, Kimmel described her as having “the glow of an expectant widow,” which many people close to the president saw as offensive and inappropriate.
Trump didn’t hold back. He took to social media and strongly criticised both Kimmel and ABC, questioning why the network was still keeping him on air. He described Kimmel as unfunny and said his show has very low ratings, suggesting that viewers are losing interest. Trump also claimed that people are angry and demanded that the network act quickly.
At the same time, the situation appears to be getting more serious behind the scenes. The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, has reportedly instructed The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, to submit early renewal applications for its broadcast licenses. While this is a regulatory process, the timing has raised questions about whether pressure is being placed on the network.
Both Trump and his wife have gone further by linking Kimmel’s joke to a dangerous incident that happened shortly after. They suggested that the comment may have contributed to tensions that led to an alleged assassination attempt during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. This claim has added even more controversy to the situation, although such connections are often debated and not clearly proven.
This isn’t the first time Kimmel has faced backlash. In the past, ABC temporarily suspended him after controversial remarks about another sensitive case involving a political figure. That history is now being brought up again as critics question whether stronger action should be taken.
