Trump to Immediately Unwind Joe Biden’s Unconstitutional Student Loan Forgiveness Plan Because
Politico reported that President Trump plans to quickly end Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness program, calling it unconstitutional.
A federal judge in Georgia recently gave Biden approval to move forward with his loan forgiveness plan just weeks before the election. Judge Randall Hall, appointed by George W. Bush, allowed a restraining order against the program to expire.
The Trump transition team is now preparing to reverse Biden’s loan forgiveness initiatives. Politico stated, “President-elect Donald Trump is ready to stop Biden’s efforts to cancel student debt as Republicans take power in the coming months.”
Trump’s advisers and allies are discussing how to undo Biden’s policies, which made it easier for borrowers to get loan forgiveness, according to sources familiar with the talks.
Last year, the US Supreme Court blocked Biden’s original student loan forgiveness plan. In August 2022, Biden announced a program to cancel over $400 billion in student loans, offering up to $10,000 in relief for borrowers earning $125,000 or less annually and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients.
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 against this program, prompting the Department of Education to create a workaround plan. This new plan canceled $39 billion in loans by counting non-payments as payments over time.
Seven Republican-led states – Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, North Dakota, and Ohio – sued Biden’s administration over this workaround after the Supreme Court struck down the original plan.
