Lawyers Advising Illegal Migrants on How to Stay in the UK Get the Shock of Their Lives

30views

The UK government is planning to introduce heavy fines for people pretending to be lawyers who give illegal migrants advice on how to stay in Britain. These fake advisers will face penalties of up to £15,000 under a new immigration crackdown.

At the moment, anyone giving immigration advice must be properly registered with the Immigration Advice Authority (IAA). If they aren’t registered, they can already be sent to jail. Now, the government wants to give the IAA even more power by letting them issue big fines to those who offer advice without permission.

This new rule will be added to the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, which is currently being discussed in Parliament. The main goal of the Bill is to give police and border agencies stronger tools to stop illegal migrants from crossing the English Channel in small boats.

Labour is shifting away from the Conservatives’ previous focus on sending migrants to places like Rwanda. Instead, they want to focus on taking down the criminal gangs who are smuggling people across the Channel.

The Home Office also said they will close a loophole that currently lets someone who’s banned from giving immigration advice continue doing so as long as they are supervised. This will no longer be allowed.

Dame Angela Eagle, the Minister for Border Security, said that people offering fake immigration advice are taking advantage of vulnerable migrants and must be punished. She said the new fines will help clean up the immigration system and protect people who truly need help. It will also strengthen the work of the IAA in regulating who can legally offer immigration advice.

At the same time, the government is preparing a wider crackdown to reduce the number of people moving to the UK. In the year leading up to June 2023, net migration – which is the difference between people arriving and leaving – reached a record high of 906,000. By the end of last year, this had dropped to 728,000, but the government wants to bring the number down even further.

A new immigration plan, called a “white paper,” is expected to be released after this week’s local elections. It will likely include stricter rules for hiring foreign workers. Companies that break employment laws could be banned from hiring people from abroad, and visa rules could be tightened.

Health Minister Stephen Kinnock said on Monday that immigration has been very good for Britain in many ways – helping the economy, enriching society, and adding to the country’s cultural diversity. However, he admitted that the immigration system had been left in a “terrible mess” by the previous Conservative government. He said that immigration had gotten out of control, especially under Boris Johnson, and the current government is now trying to fix the situation, although it will take time.
