Ruth Langsford has shared her worries about possibly getting Alzheimer’s disease in the future. Both of her parents had the illness. Her father, Dennis, passed away from it in 2012 at the age of 84, after showing symptoms since the 1990s. Her mother, Joan, who took care of Dennis at home, later also developed dementia and now lives in a care home.
Ruth is very concerned about the possibility of getting Alzheimer’s herself. She has chosen not to take a test that could predict her risk of developing the disease because there is no cure available yet. Despite her fears, Ruth is focused on living her life to the fullest and enjoying her current health.
In an interview with Woman and Home magazine, Ruth said, “I try not to think too much about Alzheimer’s, even though both my parents had it. I know how serious it is, and it scares me. There’s a test to see if you’re more likely to get it, but since there’s no treatment, I’d rather not know. Sometimes when I forget things, I get really worried, but then I try to let it go because I don’t want to dwell on it. I believe in living life, having fun, and not knowing what the future holds.”
Ruth also talked about her approach to life, saying, “I try to eat healthily, but I also want to enjoy myself. I don’t want to be too strict about food. Life is about balance.”
On the How To Be 60 podcast, Ruth expressed similar thoughts. She said, “If there was a way to prevent Alzheimer’s after taking the test, I might consider it. But since there’s no cure or clear prevention method, I prefer not to know my risk.”
Ruth also admitted that she sometimes worries about showing early signs of dementia. She said, “Whenever I forget where I put my glasses or can’t remember someone’s name, I get scared. But I try not to think about it too much because it’s really upsetting.”
Despite her fears, Ruth is determined to stay positive and enjoy her life.
