A 25-year-old woman, Rhiannon Evans, has admitted to harassment in what is believed to be the UK’s first “cyber-farting” case. She sent multiple videos of herself farting to her boyfriend’s ex-partner, Deborah Prytherch, causing her distress and anxiety.

The court in Caernarfon, North Wales, heard that Evans sent three farting videos on December 22, followed by four more over the next few days.

In the videos, Evans filmed herself passing gas, often smiling at the camera. She continued sending the videos on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, even after the police became aware of the situation.

In a statement, Prytherch said she wanted to feel safe in her own home. Evans was later arrested and admitted to sending the videos, claiming she did it because she felt her partner was being treated unfairly by his ex. However, the prosecutor argued that Evans’ actions were “purely malicious” and that she found the situation funny, while the victim did not.

Evans’ defense lawyer, Harriet Gorst, explained that there were ongoing issues between Evans’ partner and his ex-partner regarding child contact. She also said Evans had been drinking when she sent the videos and didn’t realize they would cause so much distress. Evans has mental health issues and did not intend to harm anyone.

The court ordered Evans to complete 15 rehabilitation sessions, avoid alcohol for 60 days, and follow a two-year restraining order. She was also told to pay £100 in compensation to Prytherch and £199 in court costs. Evans is now banned from contacting Prytherch.

A probation officer noted that Evans had been in a two-year relationship and had ongoing tensions with her boyfriend’s ex. Evans didn’t think sending the videos was a criminal offense and questioned why Prytherch hadn’t blocked her before the case went to court.
