Asylum Seeker Pleads with High Court for Shelter After 10 Months of Homelessness, His Reason Will Shock You

A Palestinian man, who fled his home country to escape war, says he has been homeless in Ireland for the past 10 months and is asking the High Court for help. The man, in his 40s, arrived in Ireland in March 2024 and applied for international protection at the International Protection Office.

Since then, he claims he has been left to survive on his own, with no proper place to stay. He says he’s been living in a tent, exposed to cold weather and harsh conditions, especially during winter.

The man is asking the court to order the Minister for Integration to provide him with proper support, including accommodation and a health assessment. He argues that the government’s failure to assist him goes against his basic rights under EU law.

These laws ensure that asylum seekers should have a dignified standard of living, protection from inhumane treatment, and respect for their mental and physical well-being.

He explains that his homelessness has worsened his mental health. He is suffering from PTSD because of the traumatic events he experienced in Palestine.

Sleeping outdoors has made it harder for him to cope, especially in Dublin, where he feels unsafe due to rising crime and hostility towards immigrants. He says this situation has left him feeling desperate and hopeless.

The man’s legal team has told the court that his situation is now critical, and urgent action is needed. Last month, the High Court allowed him to proceed with his case.

On Tuesday, the case was brought before Ms Justice Mary Rose Gearty. His lawyers hope the court will recognize the urgency of his situation and order the government to provide him with the help he needs.
