President Donald Trump has often placed his name on buildings and institutions during his time in office, and now he is drawing attention again after talking about a new class of U.S. Navy battleships that could carry his name.

In recent weeks, discussions have surfaced about a proposed new generation of warships reportedly referred to as the “Golden Fleet.” According to reports, the idea includes creating a new Trump-class of battleships. The head of the U.S. Navy has suggested that these ships could be equipped with advanced technology, including powerful laser systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles or hypersonic weapons.

If built, they would be the first battleships commissioned since the USS Missouri, which was launched during World War II. Modern naval warfare has shifted toward aircraft carriers, destroyers, and submarines, so the idea of bringing back traditional battleships has already sparked debate among military experts.

One detail that surprised many observers was the strong emphasis on appearance. Navy Secretary John Phelan previously posted on social media that the goal was to “make battle groups great again.” He added that the Trump-class vessel would be “the best-looking warship anywhere on the world’s oceans.”

Trump himself recently spoke about the ships during a speech in Texas to military families. He said he had seen the designs and even helped shape them. He explained that he wanted to add more “spirit” to the hull and asked for changes so the ship would look “gorgeous.” He joked about ignoring stealth design if it made the ship look unattractive, though he later added that the vessels would still include stealth features.

Trump also claimed that the new ships would be 100 times more powerful than the warships seen in the 1940s. He said such strength would ensure that no other country would challenge the United States.

The comments quickly sparked strong reactions online. Critics argued that military equipment should prioritize performance, defense capabilities, and stealth over visual appeal. Some said warships are not sports cars and are designed primarily to avoid detection and survive combat, not to look impressive.

Jeff Timmer, a political strategist who once worked within Republican circles and now advises the Lincoln Project, reacted harshly to the clip, criticizing Trump’s comments. Others online questioned whether the ships would ever actually be built, suggesting the proposal may not move beyond discussion.

Supporters, however, see Trump’s remarks as part of his broader messaging about strength and American power. They argue that modernizing the Navy with advanced technology would send a strong signal to rival nations.

At this stage, no confirmed construction timeline has been announced. The debate continues over whether reviving battleships makes strategic sense in modern warfare, where aircraft carriers, drones, submarines, and cyber capabilities play a much larger role.

The discussion has once again placed Trump’s style and priorities under the spotlight, with critics focusing on his comments about appearance and supporters emphasizing the promise of increased military strength.
