Man Breaks Into Ex’s Home and Brutally Attacks Her in Front of Children Then One Desperate Move Through a Window Saves Lives and Exposes His Violent Past

A woman became so desperate during a violent attack that she pushed the children out of a window to keep them safe.

Jeremiah Joshua Smith, who is 40 and has no fixed address, has been sent to prison for more than five years after carrying out a brutal attack on a woman in front of children. He admitted seriously hurting one woman and assaulting another in court.

The judge said he is a danger to women he gets into relationships with. He was given five years and eight months in prison, plus three years on licence after he is released. He was also banned for 15 years from contacting the victims, a witness, and the neighbour who helped the children. He is not allowed to enter the Kingsway area.

The court heard that on July 31 last year, Smith used a key to enter his ex-partner’s home early in the morning without permission. The woman woke up and found him standing over her in the living room, where her children and their friends were sleeping after a sleepover.

He was holding a bottle of vodka and became angry and jealous. He picked up two knives from the kitchen and told her that if she screamed, he would stab her.

He suddenly punched her, almost knocking her out, and grabbed her neck to stop her from screaming. While she was on the floor, he forced her to clean her own blood. He also broke her phone and damaged the SIM card.

The attack continued in front of the scared children. He stamped on her and caused a deep cut on her leg. She said he also threatened to kill her.

At one moment, when he looked away, the woman quickly pushed the four children out of a downstairs window to protect them. They climbed over a fence and ran to a neighbour for help.

When police arrived, they found the woman badly injured with a deep cut on her leg and a wound on her head. At the hospital, doctors found she also had a fractured spine.

Smith ran away after the attack but later handed himself in after a public appeal. He denied using knives and claimed she hit him with a bottle, even though he had no injuries.

The court also heard about another incident with a second woman. After she ended their relationship by message, Smith went to her home a few days later. He insulted her, punched her in the head, and hit the back of her head so hard she could not get up. As she curled up on the floor, he kept shouting at her and hit her leg. He admitted to this assault.

The court was told he has a long history of violence, with many past offences, especially against women.

His lawyer said the situation may have started differently and that he could not clearly remember everything, but he admitted hitting her with a knife handle and said the cut on her leg was not on purpose.

The police officer said Smith is a serious danger to women he gets involved with. He praised the victims for being brave enough to speak in court and said the children who saw the attack were also affected.

He also encouraged anyone going through abuse not to stay silent and to seek help.
