Gene Hackman death bombshell as doctor says ‘wife rang me day after cops say she died’

The deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, have been surrounded by mystery since they were found dead in their Santa Fe home on February 26. Initial reports suggested that Betsy died first on February 11 from hantavirus, a rare disease transmitted by rodents, and that Gene passed away a week later on February 18 due to heart failure and complications from Alzheimer’s disease. However, new information from Betsy’s doctor has cast doubt on the timeline of her death.

Dr. Josiah Child, a former emergency care specialist who runs Cloudberry Health in Santa Fe, revealed that Betsy called his clinic on February 12—a day after she was reportedly found dead. According to Dr. Child, Betsy had contacted his clinic a few weeks before her death to inquire about getting a heart scan (echocardiogram) for Gene. Although Betsy was not his patient, she had been referred to his clinic by someone else and scheduled an appointment for herself on February 12 for an unrelated issue. However, she canceled the appointment two days before, citing her husband’s poor health.

Dr. Child stated that Betsy did not show any symptoms of respiratory distress during their phone conversations, which is unusual for someone suffering from hantavirus. He noted that most hantavirus patients die in the hospital, making Betsy’s case even more puzzling. This new information suggests that Betsy may have been alive for at least a day longer than the coroner’s initial findings indicated.

The circumstances of the couple’s deaths have raised many questions. Betsy’s mummified remains were discovered on the bathroom floor, surrounded by pills and a space heater. Gene was found in the mudroom, and his pacemaker confirmed he died on February 18. Investigators believe Gene may have been alive for a week after Betsy’s death, but due to his Alzheimer’s, he might not have realized she had passed away. The lack of food in his stomach suggests he may not have eaten during that week. Tragically, their dog was also found dead, having succumbed to dehydration and starvation.

The new details from Dr. Child add another layer of complexity to the already mysterious deaths. While the exact timeline and cause of Betsy’s death remain unclear, the revelations have sparked further speculation about what truly happened in the Hackman household during those final days.
