Former President Barack Obama Launches Strong Attack on Donald Trump Over His ‘Appalling’ Actions, Issues Serious Warning About What Could Happen to America

Former US President Barack Obama has strongly criticised President Donald Trump over what he described as the shocking treatment of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Obama accused Trump’s administration of using government power to target political opponents and warned that such actions could threaten American democracy.
Obama made the comments on Sunday, October 18, 2026, after federal investigators searched Omar’s home in Washington, DC, as part of an investigation into her immigration history and how she became an American citizen.
The former president described the situation as appalling and said Americans should be worried when government agencies appear to be going after people simply because they disagree with the president.
The controversy centres on Ilhan Omar, a Democratic lawmaker representing Minnesota who has repeatedly criticised Trump and his policies. Omar was born in Somalia before her family fled the country because of political unrest and violence.
Her family spent time in a refugee camp in Kenya before moving to the United States. She later became an American citizen in 2000, when she was 17 years old, according to her account and Obama’s statement.
Omar went on to attend college, become involved in community work and eventually enter politics. She made history by becoming one of the first Muslim women elected to the US Congress and the first Somali-American woman to serve in the House of Representatives.
However, her relationship with Trump has been difficult for years. The president has repeatedly criticised her political views and questioned whether she belongs in the United States.
The latest disagreement began after federal investigators reopened questions about Omar’s citizenship.
According to reports, investigators are examining whether Omar’s age was correctly recorded when her father became an American citizen. The investigation is looking into whether she was 17 or 18 at the time, because that difference could affect how she obtained citizenship through her father.
Federal agents searched her home on October 12 and reportedly took personal documents and her mobile phone. Some of her relatives have also received subpoenas requesting information connected to the investigation.
Despite these developments, authorities have not publicly presented evidence proving that Omar committed immigration fraud, and she has strongly denied wrongdoing.
Obama believes the investigation is politically motivated because Omar has been one of Trump’s strongest critics.
In a lengthy statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, Obama argued that the American government should never use its powers to punish someone because of their political opinions.
He said people must be free to criticise their leaders without fearing that government agencies will be used against them.
Obama expressed particular concern that a sitting member of Congress could face such intense government scrutiny over citizenship questions dating back more than two decades.
He argued that the investigation appeared to be an attempt to find evidence that could be used to challenge Omar’s citizenship and possibly remove her from the country.
The former president also pointed out that Omar had spent much of her life in America, completed her education there and was elected by American voters to represent them in Congress.
For Obama, the issue goes beyond whether someone agrees or disagrees with Omar’s political views.
He believes the bigger question is whether a president should be allowed to use federal agencies against political opponents.
Obama warned that allowing such behaviour to become normal could create serious problems for future American governments.
He suggested that if one administration can use its powers to intimidate political critics, future presidents from either major political party might eventually do the same thing.
The former president also referred to other investigations involving people who have publicly disagreed with Trump.
He mentioned former FBI Director James Comey, New York’s former Attorney General Letitia James and members of the Federal Reserve as examples of people or institutions that have faced pressure or legal action during Trump’s presidency.
Obama argued that these cases raised wider concerns about how federal government powers were being used.
He believes that political disagreements should be settled through democratic debate and elections rather than by using law enforcement agencies to put pressure on opponents.
Trump, however, has denied personally directing the investigation into Omar.
The president has previously said that matters involving possible wrongdoing should be handled by the Justice Department. He has also continued to criticise Omar, questioning her conduct while insisting that he is not personally responsible for the investigation.
Supporters of the investigation argue that immigration records should be examined if authorities believe there may be irregularities, regardless of the person’s political position.
They believe that being an elected politician should not prevent someone from facing legitimate questions about their citizenship.
However, critics argue that investigations must be based on credible evidence and should never be used as punishment for opposing a president.
Reports have also revealed that immigration officials examined Omar’s citizenship records during Trump’s first presidency but did not find sufficient evidence of wrongdoing to pursue a full investigation.
That earlier review has added to questions about why the matter is receiving renewed attention.
Omar and her legal representatives have raised concerns about the recent search of her home. Her lawyers have alleged that federal authorities failed to follow certain restrictions imposed by a judge, although the Justice Department disputes that allegation.
The disagreement has now become another major political controversy in Washington, particularly as the United States approaches its midterm elections.
Obama’s decision to speak publicly has attracted attention because he has generally avoided becoming involved in every political dispute since leaving the White House in January 2017.
Although he has criticised Trump on several occasions, his latest statement was unusually direct and focused on what he believes is a serious threat to democratic principles.
The former president made clear that Americans do not have to support Omar or agree with her political opinions to be concerned about how she is being treated.
His warning was that the same government powers being used against one political figure today could eventually be used against others tomorrow.
For now, the investigation into Omar’s immigration records remains a source of political disagreement. No publicly disclosed evidence has established that she obtained American citizenship through fraud.
