The event took place in the East Room of the White House on September 24. First Lady Melania Trump and China’s First Lady Peng Liyuan were also present as the two leaders addressed those gathered.

However, it was not only what Xi said that attracted attention. A video showing Trump sitting behind the Chinese president quickly began spreading across social media.

As Xi spoke and an interpreter translated his words into English, Trump could be seen moving around in his chair and blinking repeatedly. At certain moments, his eyes appeared to remain closed for longer than a normal blink.

The footage led some viewers to claim that Trump was struggling to stay awake. Others went further and accused him of briefly falling asleep, although the video itself does not establish with certainty whether he was actually asleep.

The moment became even more noticeable when Xi announced that China would send two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, to Zoo Atlanta in Georgia as part of a new 10-year conservation agreement.

While Xi was making the announcement in Chinese, Trump appeared quiet and continued blinking. But after the interpreter translated the panda announcement into English, Trump’s expression changed and he began smiling.

That small moment was enough to cause a major reaction online.

Critics quickly shared close-up clips of Trump, with some claiming the president could barely keep his eyes open while sitting beside one of the world’s most powerful leaders.

One social media user claimed Trump was “falling asleep” while Xi was speaking. Another described the moment as embarrassing because it happened during an important international event watched by people around the world.

Others immediately pointed to Trump’s long history of calling former President Joe Biden “Sleepy Joe.” Critics argued that there was irony in Trump now facing similar accusations himself.

Some people responded with jokes and sarcastic comments, while others used the footage to raise questions about Trump’s energy during long public events.

However, claims about Trump’s health or ability to serve cannot be established simply from a short video showing him closing his eyes. The footage has mainly fuelled another political argument over how his public appearances are interpreted.

This is also not the first time Trump has faced such accusations.

Earlier in the year, cameras captured moments during other public events that critics said showed Trump appearing tired or possibly dozing. Similar accusations were made after a Board of Peace meeting in Washington, D.C., where representatives from several countries were present.

Trump also faced online criticism after another public appearance in July, when some viewers claimed he appeared to briefly fall asleep during Senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral.

The White House and Trump administration officials have repeatedly rejected claims that the president regularly falls asleep during important meetings and events.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio strongly defended Trump when he was questioned about the issue during an appearance before the House Foreign Relations Committee in June.

Rubio said he had never personally seen Trump fall asleep. Instead, he claimed Trump sleeps very little and sometimes calls him as late as 2 a.m.

The White House has also responded directly to photographs and videos that critics claimed showed Trump sleeping.

In one previous case, an image showed Trump sitting with his eyes closed. The administration’s Rapid Response account strongly rejected claims that he had fallen asleep and insisted that the photograph simply captured him blinking.

That explanation has not stopped Trump’s critics from continuing to focus on similar moments whenever they appear.

The latest footage from Xi Jinping’s visit has now brought the argument back into the spotlight.

For Trump’s critics, the video provided another opportunity to question his energy during lengthy public appearances. His supporters and administration officials, however, have previously argued that individual photographs or short video clips can create a misleading impression of what actually happened.

Whatever the explanation for the latest moment, the footage quickly became another major talking point online.

What was supposed to be an important diplomatic occasion between the United States and China instead produced a viral side story, as viewers closely examined Trump’s reaction while Xi delivered his speech.

And because Trump spent years attacking Biden with the nickname “Sleepy Joe,” every video that appears to show Trump closing his eyes for an extended period is likely to attract even more attention from his political critics.
