Spy chief shares eerie prediction for Russia as he details how Putin’s downfall could unfold
A senior intelligence chief has made a surprising prediction about Russia’s future, saying that if Vladimir Putin loses power, it could happen suddenly in what he described as an “overnight revolution”.
Putin ordered Russian troops to invade Ukraine in February 2022. He described the invasion as a “special military operation”, but it soon developed into a long and deadly war.
Some people originally believed the fighting would end within a week. However, four and a half years have now passed, and there is still no clear sign that the war will end soon.
US President Donald Trump has spoken with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an effort to secure a peace agreement. Despite these discussions, Russia and Ukraine have not yet reached a deal.
Kaupo Rosin, the head of Estonia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, said frustration about the war is growing across different parts of Russian society. According to him, many Russians are becoming tired of the fighting and want the conflict to end.
Rosin explained that Putin does not appear to be in immediate danger of being removed from power. However, he believes that if political change comes to Russia, it could happen very quickly and take the rest of the world by surprise.
He said any major change could happen almost overnight, without much warning.
The intelligence chief also claimed that influential people close to Russia’s leadership are no longer talking confidently about achieving complete victory in Ukraine. Instead, they are reportedly discussing different ways the war could end.
Rosin said Putin is now facing a difficult choice because none of the available options are good for him. Continuing the war could lead to more Russian soldiers being killed, greater economic problems and rising tension inside the country.
If powerful people with access to money, weapons and important information decide that Russia would be better without Putin, it could eventually threaten his position.
However, ending the war also carries risks for Putin. Rosin said the Russian leader could be seen as weak if he stops the fighting without achieving the victory he promised.
He added that Russia is currently in a very difficult position. Many people working in the country’s economy reportedly understand how serious the situation has become, while some wealthy and powerful Russian business figures may also be privately discussing what should happen next.
Rosin believes Putin is taking a new political risk every day that the war continues. Although there is no clear evidence that his removal is about to happen, he warned that events in Russia could change much faster than many people expect.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to face heavy Russian attacks. Recent strikes on Kyiv reportedly killed 38 people overnight on Saturday.
President Zelenskyy has promised that Ukraine will respond to every Russian attack.
