Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has told ITV News that he is open to sending British soldiers to Ukraine as peacekeepers. This is the first time he has spoken since Donald Trump announced that he and Vladimir Putin have agreed to work closely on ending the war in Ukraine. Starmer emphasized that Ukraine must be central to any peace talks.
In an interview with ITV News’ Political Editor Robert Peston, Starmer said that Britain will be involved in any long-term peace deal, but stressed that Ukraine must remain an independent and strong country. He acknowledged that Trump has a role in negotiations but added that the UN charter, which says one country should not invade another, must be respected.
When Peston asked if Starmer would consider sending UK troops to Ukraine as peacekeepers, the Prime Minister replied, “I won’t go into specifics, but if there is peace, Ukraine will need security guarantees, and the UK will play its part. I’ve made this clear to President Zelenskyy. However, this guarantee must have US support and be coordinated with NATO.”
Starmer’s comments follow Trump’s announcement that he had spoken with Putin, and both leaders agreed to work together to end the war, including visiting each other’s countries. Trump also spoke with Zelenskyy, who said they discussed ways to achieve peace. However, when asked if Ukraine would be an equal partner in the peace process, Trump said, “Interesting question. I think they have to make peace.”
This call between Trump and Putin suggests that the US and Russia might try to negotiate a deal without involving Ukraine, which would be a major shift from the Biden administration’s stance that Ukraine must be fully involved in any decisions.
Starmer told Peston that Ukraine must remain independent and strong, as its security is tied to Europe’s safety and values. He said, “Ukraine is at the forefront of a larger conflict. That’s why I agree with President Trump that Europe needs to do more. European nations, including the UK, should take greater responsibility for defense and security, but the US and NATO must remain key partners.”
After the call between Putin and Trump, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine cannot accept any agreements made without its involvement. He said, “As an independent country, we will not accept any bilateral talks about Ukraine that exclude us. I have made this very clear to our partners.”
