A new survey shows that many older people are feeling sicker and more depressed after the government cut winter fuel payments. The survey, done by the trade union Unite, found that two-thirds of seniors have turned down their heating this year because of the policy.
One in four older people said they feel more depressed, stressed, or anxious, and 18% said they’ve gotten sick or their health has gotten worse. About 16% said they’re eating fewer hot meals, and 11% said they feel hungry more often. A third of those surveyed are bathing or showering less, and 16% are going to public places to stay warm.
Sharon Graham, the leader of Unite, said: “This survey shows that cutting the winter fuel payment is hurting pensioners. They’re cold at home, skipping baths, and missing meals. People who’ve worked their whole lives deserve to live with dignity. Instead of taking money from pensioners, the government should tax the very rich.”
The survey included over 6,000 people. Unite is planning a protest in Westminster today against the policy, which limits winter fuel payments to only those who receive pension credit. The union is also taking legal action to try to stop the cuts.
The Labour government has faced criticism for removing the winter fuel payment from about 10 million older people. Ministers say they had to make the cuts because of a £22 billion budget shortfall left by the previous Conservative government, but the Conservatives deny this.
Charities, opposition parties, unions, and even some Labour politicians have criticized the move. The Daily Express newspaper is calling for Chancellor Rachel Reeves to bring back the payments, which were up to £300 per year for pensioners.
A government spokesperson said: “We don’t want anyone to suffer this winter. That’s why we’ve kept the Warm Home Discount and expanded the Household Support Fund to help with food, heating, and bills. We’re also raising the state pension by up to £1,900 for millions of people. Plus, the energy industry is providing £500 million in support this winter.”
