Panamanians have reacted strongly to Donald Trump’s recent comments about taking back control of the Panama Canal. Protesters gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Panama City on Tuesday to express their anger and frustration.

The group chanted slogans such as, “Trump, animal, leave the canal alone,” and held signs calling Trump a “public enemy of Panama.” To show their disapproval, some even burned flags with Trump’s image. The protest made it clear that many Panamanians view Trump’s remarks as disrespectful to their country’s sovereignty.

The Panama Canal, which is a vital waterway for global trade, was built by the United States in 1914. It remained under U.S. control for decades until 1999, when President Jimmy Carter signed an agreement to transfer ownership to Panama. This move was seen as a recognition of Panama’s right to manage its own territory.

However, Trump recently criticized Panama’s government, claiming they are charging American ships “unfair and ridiculous” fees to use the canal. He also accused Panama of allowing China to gain too much influence over the canal’s operations. During a rally in Arizona, Trump said, “The fees being charged are highly unfair, especially considering the generosity the United States has shown Panama. This needs to stop.”

Trump went on to emphasize the importance of the canal to the U.S., stating, “The United States has a big and vested interest in the secure, efficient, and reliable operation of the Panama Canal.”

In response, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino defended his country’s ownership of the canal. In a video shared on social media, he stated, “Every square meter of the Panama Canal belongs to Panama and will continue to belong to Panama. The agreement made in 1999 is final and cannot be reversed.”

Despite President Mulino’s strong words, Trump dismissed the statement by saying, “We’ll see about that!” His response has only added to the tension, as many Panamanians feel their national pride and sovereignty are being challenged.
