The real cause of the migrant crisis is not the migrants or the smuggling gangs – William Clouston Exposed The Causes
William Clouston, leader of the Social Democratic Party, has criticized the government for failing to control illegal migration and for making the situation worse with poor decisions.
He says it’s not surprising that 20,000 illegal migrants have arrived since Labour came to power. This is because the government doesn’t have a proper system to stop people entering the country illegally. Instead of preventing it, the government encourages more people to come by offering many benefits. These benefits include free hotel rooms, travel passes, and cash payments. Migrants also have a strong chance of being allowed to stay permanently in Britain. Once they are settled, they can use the country’s welfare services, such as healthcare and social support, without ever contributing to the system.
Clouston highlights that the cost of asylum migration is extremely high. He refers to a study from the University of Amsterdam, which found that some asylum seekers cost their host countries over €620,000 per person throughout their lifetime. If the same is true for Britain, then the 20,000 illegal arrivals could cost British taxpayers billions of pounds in the coming years.
He says this is very worrying because the UK is already struggling with its finances. The government is spending more money than it collects in taxes every year, and the country’s debt is growing rapidly. Clouston argues that Labour and the Conservatives are both to blame because neither party is serious about controlling immigration or protecting the borders. He calls their behavior reckless and irresponsible because it puts a huge financial burden on the country and causes social problems for local communities.
Clouston also criticizes the government for focusing on empty promises instead of real solutions. He mentions ideas like the “Rwanda scheme” and slogans like “Smash the Gangs,” saying these are just publicity stunts to get attention. These actions might sound impressive, but they don’t solve the problem. Local people are left feeling ignored and powerless when unvetted migrants—sometimes young men from dangerous areas—are placed in hotels and hostels in their towns and cities. People worry about safety, and they don’t feel respected by the government.
According to Clouston, the real cause of the migration crisis is not the migrants themselves or the smuggling gangs that bring them. Instead, he blames Britain’s ruling class for failing to use the freedoms that Brexit provided after 2016. Brexit gave the government a chance to take control of the country’s borders, but they did not act on it.
Clouston believes the UK could have secured its borders by doing two things:
1. Leaving outdated international agreements – He says Britain should have left postwar refugee conventions and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which force the country to accept asylum seekers under old rules that no longer fit today’s challenges.
2. Offshore processing for asylum claims– He suggests that Britain could process asylum claims in an overseas territory, like Ascension Island, which is far away. He points to Australia as an example of how this approach works. When Australia started processing asylum seekers offshore, the number of people arriving illegally dropped immediately because people were no longer encouraged to risk the journey.
However, Clouston says Britain’s leaders don’t take these steps because they lack the courage to make difficult decisions.
He believes the British public will hold the government accountable at the next election. Until then, he warns that illegal migration will continue to increase, bringing even higher financial costs and social challenges. This will make life harder for everyone in the UK, especially local communities who are already struggling to cope.
