New data shows a sharp increase in shoplifting and knife crime in London, leading to criticism of Mayor Sadiq Khan. According to the National Crime Survey, shoplifting in London rose by 50% in the year up to September 2024, with over 80,000 cases reported. Knife crime also increased by 18% in the city, compared to just 4% across the rest of the country. Overall, crime in London went up from 915,000 incidents in 2023 to 952,400 in 2024.
Retailers are warning that theft is becoming uncontrollable, and critics are blaming Khan for the rise in crime. Reform UK’s Lee Anderson criticized Khan for receiving a knighthood despite the worsening crime situation. Anderson said the public feels betrayed by Khan’s leadership and believes he has prioritized others over British citizens.
Susan Hall, a Conservative spokesperson, also blamed Labour politicians for the crime surge, saying it is damaging the city. She opposes Khan’s plan to cut 1,300 police officers, arguing it will make the situation worse. Hall accused Labour of failing to support the police and tackle crime effectively.
Earlier this month, it was reported that London could lose 2,300 police officers, the lowest number in six years, due to funding issues. Police warn that this will make it harder to keep people safe and respond to emergencies.
However, a spokesperson for Sadiq Khan pointed out that violent crime in London is still lower than the national average. They highlighted progress in reducing knife injuries among young people, homicides, gun crime, and burglaries since 2016. They also blamed the rise in theft and shoplifting on the cost-of-living crisis and past government cuts to police funding.
