The Oval Office became tense on Monday when President Donald Trump got into a heated exchange with CNN reporter Kristen Holmes after she asked him a simple question about North Korea and U.S. military exercises with South Korea.

Holmes asked Trump whether he had spoken with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and whether Kim had asked him to reduce the military exercises between the United States and South Korea. Instead of giving a direct answer, Trump became angry and told the reporter to be quiet. He also accused CNN of spreading “fake news.”

The situation became even more uncomfortable when Trump turned to 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams, who was being honoured at the White House for rescuing a 10-year-old boy from dangerous water. Trump asked the teenager whether he thought Holmes was being disrespectful.

The teenager was suddenly placed in the middle of the argument while the reporter continued trying to get an answer from the president.

The exchange happened shortly after another reporter asked Trump about criticism that reducing military exercises with South Korea could make North Korea more important than America’s long-standing ally.

Trump defended his decision and said he believed it would make the situation safer. He also pointed to his relationship with Kim Jong Un, saying that the North Korean leader had always treated him with respect.

Trump said he had met Kim several times and believed they understood each other. He also claimed that Kim did not have good relationships with former presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden but had a good relationship with him.

Holmes then asked a follow-up question.

She wanted to know whether Kim had personally asked Trump to reduce the military exercises with South Korea.

Trump did not answer the question directly.

Instead, he told Holmes, “Quiet,” and said she was being disrespectful in front of the young lifeguard. He then asked Williams if he thought the reporter was being disrespectful.

Holmes tried to continue with her question and Trump asked which news organisation she worked for.

When she said CNN, Trump replied by calling the network “fake news.”

Holmes continued to press the president, explaining that she was only trying to find out whether he had spoken with Kim Jong Un about the military exercises.

Trump became increasingly angry and accused her of being loud and disrespectful. He again told her to be quiet.

The confrontation quickly attracted attention online, with many people criticising Trump’s response to the reporter. Some social media users said Holmes had clearly managed to make the president angry, while others criticised what they saw as another example of Trump losing his temper when challenged by a female journalist.

Trump later attacked CNN again when another question was raised about reports concerning conditions aboard the USS Lincoln.

He dismissed the reports as “fake news” and said the ship had been operating for a long time. Trump said a retired admiral had spoken to him about the situation and claimed the admiral believed the ships were well maintained.

Trump used the comments to again argue that CNN’s reporting was inaccurate.

A social media account supportive of Trump also attacked Holmes, calling her a disgrace to journalism and accusing her of using an event honouring a teenage hero to make a political attack.

CNN strongly defended Holmes.

The network said it stood behind her and rejected the attacks against her. A CNN spokesperson said Holmes was one of the most respected journalists covering the White House and that she was simply doing her job by asking the president a difficult but important question on behalf of the American public.

The spokesperson also said that politicians have the right to disagree with journalists and challenge their reporting, but personally attacking reporters for asking questions was not appropriate.

The incident is the latest in a long list of confrontations between Trump and female journalists during his second term as president.

At the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in July, Trump also criticised CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins after she received an award for her reporting on his previous confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Trump questioned why Collins had received the award and also made comments about her appearance and personality.

In another incident in June, Trump clashed with NBC’s Kristen Welker after she challenged him to provide evidence for his claims that elections were being rigged against him. Trump responded by telling her that she was either “crooked” or “stupid.”

Trump has also had tense exchanges with female reporters aboard Air Force One. In late 2025, reporters questioned him about an MRI he had undergone, leading to another heated exchange.

Only days earlier, Trump had also become angry with CBS News reporter Nancy Cordes after she questioned his claims about the Biden administration and the vetting of Afghan refugees following a shooting that killed two National Guard members in Washington, D.C.

During that confrontation, Trump asked Cordes if she was a “stupid person.”

He has also attacked veteran New York Times reporter Katie Rogers, accusing her of only writing negative stories about him and making personal comments about her.

Before that, Trump clashed with Bloomberg’s White House correspondent Catherine Lucey when she tried to ask him about the Epstein files. Trump cut her off and told her to be quiet.

The latest Oval Office confrontation has therefore added another chapter to Trump’s repeated clashes with female reporters. What began as a question about North Korea and U.S. military exercises quickly turned into an angry exchange, with Trump attacking the reporter instead of directly answering the question.
