A man named Hamza Amri has been sent to jail for six months after punching another asylum seeker. Amri, 29, moved to the UK two years ago and was previously housed on the Bibby Stockholm barge in Dorset. He now lives in asylum seeker accommodation in Bournemouth.
The incident happened on June 8 last year during his wife’s birthday celebration at a hotel. Amri arrived at Poole Magistrates’ Court wearing expensive clothes, including a River Island jacket, Nike trainers worth £180, and carrying two iPhone 13s.
On the day of the attack, Amri rode his bicycle to an immigration hotel where the victim, Kamal Iamranene, was staying. He hid a knife under a traffic cone and called Iamranene to come outside. They started arguing before Amri punched Iamranene so hard that he passed out. Amri then picked up the knife, waved it near the unconscious man’s face, and took a picture of him lying on the ground before hotel staff stopped him.
Iamranene was left with a cut lip and struggled to eat for some time after the attack.
Amri was charged with assault and carrying a knife in public. He admitted to both crimes.
Amri, a Tunisian national, had applied for asylum in the UK in 2023, but his request was denied. He is now appealing the decision.
His lawyer told the court that Amri had been drinking Jack Daniels that night and was very drunk, even seen shadowboxing in the street.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party may soon face pressure to deport failed asylum seekers and criminals under new laws. The EU is also considering changing asylum rules, which could affect UK immigration policies in the future.
Angela Sharma, an immigration lawyer, said if the EU makes these changes, the UK may also feel pressure to tighten its laws.
