Donald Trump’s Secret Renovation Project Goes Public Days After Cameras Catch Him ‘Struggling’ to Walk — Fans Zero In on the Brutal Irony
Donald Trump has continued making major changes to the White House, with several construction and renovation projects taking place during his presidency.
One of the biggest projects is a new ballroom, which is still being built. Work around the East Wing has also attracted a lot of attention, with parts of the area being demolished as construction continues. Trump has publicly spoken about some of these projects and has often defended his plans.
However, another renovation project has now caught people’s attention. Unlike the ballroom, this project is much smaller and is hidden underground in an area that most members of the public will never visit.
Public contract records reportedly show that almost $253,000 was awarded for work on the White House bowling alley. The contract was given out on July 28 and was mainly connected to changes and repairs to the lighting inside the bowling area.
The bowling alley has two lanes and is located in the basement of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. It is mainly used by White House staff and their guests.

The bowling alley has a long history. It was originally built in 1947 as a birthday gift for President Harry S. Truman when he turned 63. Friends from his home state of Missouri paid for it. It was first placed in the West Wing before being moved in 1955. President Richard Nixon later had another single bowling lane built underneath the White House in 1969.
The spending did not end with the nearly $253,000 lighting project. On August 18, the General Services Administration reportedly gave the same contractor another $8,800 for what was described as “escort services.” This involved helping outside workers move through secure areas.
On the same day, the company was also awarded a separate $878,000 contract for a basement studio project in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The public listing did not explain exactly what that project involved.
The contractor involved is Charles Mann Enterprises, a Washington-based company founded by former NFL player Charles Mann.
The bowling alley spending quickly attracted criticism online. Some people questioned why so much money was being spent on the area, while others were surprised to discover that the White House even had a bowling alley.
However, a White House official defended the work and said it was simply normal maintenance and repairs. According to the official, the work included fixing broken light fixtures. The official also said the bowling area had welcomed nearly 10,000 outside guests during the previous year and that Trump himself was not involved in deciding on the work.
The White House is spending $250,000 on its bowling alley.

The issue has also brought attention back to what happened during Barack Obama’s presidency.
In 2014, the General Services Administration proposed rebuilding the same bowling lanes because they were said to be in very poor condition. Republicans strongly criticised the proposal at the time, and the plan was eventually stopped.
The Republican-controlled House also passed a measure aimed at preventing federal money from being used for the renovation. Republican Congressman Pat Meehan described the bowling alley project as something people might want rather than something they actually needed.
The bowling alley was later fully restored during Trump’s first term, with First Lady Melania Trump overseeing the work. That renovation included restoring the original wooden lanes and improving the lighting. However, taxpayers did not pay for that project. The Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America covered the cost.
Now, the latest spending has brought the bowling alley back into the spotlight, especially as several other major construction projects continue around the White House.
