Donald Trump surprised many people by showing sympathy and support for Joe Biden after news broke that Biden had been diagnosed with a serious form of prostate cancer. In a short post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said that he and his wife Melania were sad to hear about Biden’s health and sent their best wishes to Joe, his wife Jill, and the rest of the family. He also wished Biden a quick and successful recovery.
This message was unexpected because Trump usually criticizes Biden harshly and has even nicknamed him “Sleepy Joe.” Biden, who is 82 years old, was diagnosed after doctors found a lump in his prostate while he was being checked for urinary problems. Later tests confirmed that the cancer had already spread to his bones, which means it’s a more dangerous and advanced stage. However, the good news is that it’s the type of cancer that can still be treated using hormone therapy. Biden and his doctors are now discussing the best treatment options.
Doctors said that his Gleason score—a number that shows how aggressive prostate cancer is—was nine, which is very high and suggests the cancer is growing quickly. Once this type of cancer spreads to the bones, it becomes harder to treat. A top doctor, Dr. Matthew Smith, said that although it can’t be cured, it can still be managed with medications. Most men in Biden’s situation are not advised to go through surgery or radiation, but they can live for several more years with the right treatment. Many patients in similar situations live for four to five more years thanks to medical advances.
Biden received support from both political parties. Vice President Kamala Harris praised him as a strong fighter and said she believed he would face this health challenge with courage and determination, just like he has done throughout his life. Former President Barack Obama also spoke kindly of Biden, saying that no one has worked harder to fight cancer than him and that he would handle this battle with strength and grace.
Fighting cancer has been a personal mission for Biden. He relaunched the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative in 2022 to cut cancer death rates in half over the next 25 years. This program was especially close to his heart because his son Beau died of brain cancer in 2015. At the launch, Biden said it was time for America to prove that it could accomplish something big and important.
Biden’s health had been a concern during his presidency. After a weak performance in a 2024 debate, he decided to withdraw from the presidential race. Kamala Harris then ran in his place but eventually lost to Donald Trump, who returned to the White House.
There were also rumors in Biden’s final year in office that his health was worse than the public was told. A new book, Original Sin, claims that Biden’s staff tried to hide how much his health was declining. Biden has denied this strongly.
During his time as president, Biden had a few other health issues too. In 2023, he had a skin cancer growth removed from his chest, and in 2021, doctors removed a polyp from his colon. It wasn’t cancerous, but it could have become dangerous later.
Despite his age and health challenges, Biden has always tried to stay focused on helping people, especially through major health initiatives like the fight against cancer.
