‘Worst Possible Move!’ CNN Insiders Revolt Over Plan To ‘Sideline’ Jim Acosta — Widely Seen As ‘Appeasing Trump’

Current and former CNN staff are criticizing reports that the network wants to “sideline” anchor Jim Acosta to please President-elect Donald Trump.

Former CNN journalist Oliver Darcy reported that CNN CEO Mark Thompson offered Acosta a surprising proposal: move his show to the midnight slot, running until 2 a.m. ET. A source said, “This feels like an effort to get rid of Acosta to please Trump. Moving to midnight isn’t a serious offer, especially since his ratings are among the best on the network.”

Mediaite confirmed the report, with sources saying Acosta raised concerns about the timing of the move, which comes just before Trump’s inauguration. Acosta has clashed with Trump in the past, even winning a court battle after the Trump administration banned him from White House briefings.

Acosta currently hosts CNN Newsroom With Jim Acosta, a well-performing daytime show known for its tough reporting, especially on Trump and Republicans. Current and former CNN staffers believe this move is an attempt to appease Trump and see it as damaging to the network’s reputation.

One staffer said, “Jim isn’t the problem. He delivers strong ratings and has a loyal audience.” They added, “He’s known for holding power accountable, so sidelining him might discourage other journalists from being tough on the new administration.”

Another employee described the move as “the worst decision at the worst time,” adding, “This seems like a move to appease Trump, who won’t be satisfied anyway. If Acosta is sidelined, it will be seen as a sign of weakness.”

A former staffer expressed surprise, saying, “Jim speaks truth and is an excellent journalist. This decision might alienate viewers further, especially those already critical of CNN’s choices.”

Staff members worry that moving Acosta to a late-night slot will reduce his influence. One said, “It feels like we’re being weak against the new president and silencing someone who consistently delivers.”

While many support Acosta behind the scenes, it remains uncertain if his colleagues will publicly oppose the decision, as doing so could carry risks.
