Newly elected MP Sarah Poachin gave her first speech in Parliament this week, and it was nothing short of passionate and direct. Speaking less than a week after taking her seat, Poachin said she felt it was urgent to speak up about a growing problem affecting her constituency of Runcorn.

In her maiden speech, she thanked colleagues for attending and joked about them leaving the pub to hear her speak. But the tone quickly shifted as she highlighted the rising number of illegal immigrants being housed in her area.

According to Poachin, over 900 illegal immigrants are currently living in Runcorn—around 400 of them in the Daresbury Hotel, which is being used as an asylum hotel, while the rest are placed in shared housing units known as HMOs (Houses of Multiple Occupancy). She warned that these HMOs often have 15 to 20 young men living in them, surrounded by families who now face sleepless nights, fear, and rising crime.

Poachin criticized a new government plan that encourages private landlords to house illegal immigrants in exchange for guaranteed rent and paid maintenance. She said this policy could lead to British tenants being evicted, higher rent prices, and a deeper housing crisis.

“People are frightened to go out,” she told Parliament. “I’ve seen the CCTV, I’ve heard the stories during my campaign. These houses are breeding grounds for drug gangs, people trafficking, and grooming networks.”

She also took aim at those in government who have downplayed the link between illegal immigration and organized crime. Poachin vowed to stand up for women and children who are at risk and promised to make safety a top priority in her work as an MP.

“I will not stay silent,” she said firmly. “I will champion the protection of women and children—not deny it.”

Her speech was met with both praise and criticism, but it made one thing clear—Sarah Poachin plans to be a bold voice in Parliament, speaking up on the issues that matter most to her community.
