However, UK-based veterinarian Cat the Vet has shared some valuable insights on how to properly care for and bond with your feline friends. In a recent TikTok video that gained over 3,500 views, she explained that cats prefer to receive affection on their own terms rather than through forced cuddles or constant attention.
Cat emphasized that while cats can be affectionate, they like to be in control of their interactions. She said, “Our cats are affectionate, but they like to be on their own terms. They prefer to be in control. So stroking, yes, hanging out, absolutely, but big smooshy cuddles? Maybe not so much.” This means that respecting your cat’s boundaries and allowing them to approach you when they’re ready is key to building a strong bond.
In addition to understanding their need for independence, Cat shared tips on how to care for cats in a way that aligns with their natural instincts. One important piece of advice was about feeding. She warned against leaving a large bowl of food out all day, as this can encourage overeating, leading to health issues like obesity and arthritis. Instead, she recommended feeding cats smaller, regular portions or using puzzle balls and interactive toys to make mealtime more engaging and mentally stimulating.
Cat also highlighted the importance of providing a comfortable and clean litter tray for your cat. She explained that cats prefer spacious, secluded litter trays with a clear view of their surroundings. “They like to be able to see around them when they go because remember, they are vulnerable when they go to the toilet,” she said. She advised that the litter tray should be at least one and a half times the length of the cat and filled with sand-like litter. Regularly cleaning the tray is also crucial, as scooping poop is, in her words, “an act of true love.”
