A new law has just been passed in the U.S. House of Representatives that will change the way elections work in the country. This comes after Donald Trump, now back in office for a second term as president, signed an executive order focused on securing the election process.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has signed many executive orders, some of which have caused a lot of debate. These include changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, shutting down the Department of Education, and making decisions that could affect healthcare.
One of his recent executive orders is called “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections.” In it, Trump argues that the U.S. doesn’t do enough to prevent election fraud. He points out that other countries like India and Brazil use biometric systems and ID checks to confirm voter identity, while the U.S. mostly depends on people simply saying they’re citizens.
To back up this order, a bill called the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or the SAVE Act, has now been passed in the House. The vote was close — 220 in favor and 208 against.
The main rule in the bill is that people will now have to show proof they are U.S. citizens when registering to vote in federal elections. Acceptable documents include a U.S. passport, a REAL ID (a specific kind of government-issued ID), military IDs, or other official photo IDs from the federal or state government.
The bill also tells states to work with federal agencies like the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department to share voter information and crack down on illegal voting.
However, not everyone agrees with the new law. Some critics say that many Americans, especially those with lower incomes, don’t have passports or birth certificates. Getting a passport costs about $165, which could make it harder for some people to vote. Georgia Democrat Nikema Williams called it a “poll tax,” accusing the law of making it harder for people to take part in elections.
But Republican Mary Miller fired back, saying that it’s unfair to assume people in rural areas, women, or people of color can’t get IDs, since IDs are needed for many other things in everyday life.
After signing the executive order, Trump told reporters that he hopes these changes will stop election fraud. He believes this is a big step toward making elections more honest and secure.
