Donald Trump, who is preparing to take office as President, recently adjusted his statements about lowering prices quickly.
In an interview with Time Magazine, he said that while it will be very difficult to bring prices down, he believes it can happen eventually.
He specifically mentioned grocery prices, saying it’s not easy to reduce costs once they have gone up, but he is confident that improvements in energy and supply chains will help.
When asked about the rising grocery prices, Trump explained that supply chain issues are a big reason for the problem. He compared the situation to what President Joe Biden has said in the past.
Trump noted that energy costs are a major factor affecting everything else, including food prices.
He said fixing the supply chain is a priority, describing it as “broken” and pointing out delays at ports where goods aren’t being moved efficiently.
He recalled seeing shipping containers stacked up at docks in California, a situation he had never seen this bad in 20 years.
Trump’s latest statements are a shift from what he has been saying in recent months. At several rallies, he promised to bring down prices quickly and dramatically.
For example, in August, he told a crowd that prices would “come down fast.” In September, he said his administration would end inflation and make life more affordable for Americans, specifically mentioning grocery costs, car prices, and energy bills.
In October, he pledged to cut energy prices by half within a year and to lower taxes, reduce inflation, and bring back manufacturing jobs.
On November 4, 2024, Trump repeated these promises at multiple events across the country.
In Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Michigan, and Pittsburgh, he spoke about ending inflation, lowering prices, and cutting taxes.
At each stop, he assured his audience that addressing high costs would be a top priority for his presidency. During the Fox Nation “Patriot Awards” event, he told attendees, “We’re going to get your prices down.”
However, in the recent Time Magazine interview, Trump admitted that the task won’t be as simple as he initially suggested. He explained that rising prices, especially for groceries, are difficult to reverse once they’ve gone up.
Still, he remains hopeful that by focusing on reducing energy costs and fixing supply chain problems, his administration can achieve these goals.
This week, Trump was also named Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year” for the second time.
Alongside this honor, the interview gave him an opportunity to make several significant comments about his plans for tackling major issues like inflation, energy costs, and the economy.
While his promises remain ambitious, Trump acknowledges the challenges ahead but insists that progress is possible.
