A Russian soldier captured a terrifying moment on video when his unit was hit by a series of Ukrainian HIMARS rocket strikes while they were trying to cross a damaged bridge.
The soldiers were near Zvannoe in Russia’s Kursk region, trying to recover equipment from vehicles stuck on the bridge. You can clearly hear the fear in their voices as one of them shouted, “Let’s take it and get out of here!” Right after he said that, the sound of incoming rockets filled the air, followed by huge explosions and fireballs that shook the entire bridge.
Photos show the soldiers running in panic, trying to escape the blasts as everything around them exploded into chaos. Zvannoe is only about 24 kilometers away from the village of Tetkino, and recently, Ukraine has been launching more attacks in this region. They’re focusing on hitting Russian supply routes, as reported by David Axe from Forbes.
The bridge over the Seym River had already been damaged by a previous attack earlier in May, but soldiers were still able to walk across it. That’s likely why Ukraine struck again, this time capturing the attack on video. On May 6, Ukraine’s Center for Defense Strategies explained that their forces were trying to isolate Russian units around Tetkino and other nearby areas in the Glushkovo district of Kursk.
After being pushed back from Kursk, Ukraine is now trying to take back control along the border. Part of their plan includes stopping supplies from reaching Russian troops defending Tetkino from Ukrainian attacks. They’ve been learning from their mistakes during the earlier retreat from Kursk.
One major problem back then was that they didn’t completely destroy Russian supply routes across the Seym River in the north. Even though Ukraine bombed some bridges, Russia managed to fix them or build temporary floating bridges to keep their supply lines open. Now, Ukraine is trying to stop that from happening again.
