In a dramatic interception off the coast of Southern California, the U.S. Coast Guard captured a boat carrying 20 suspected illegal migrants.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, was captured on video and shared by the Coast Guard’s San Diego division. The footage shows the Coast Guard chasing a 30-foot panga-style vessel 21 miles off Point Loma, San Diego, before catching up to the boat and ordering the migrants to raise their hands.
The video begins with Coast Guard members speeding through the waters in a small boat, pursuing the vessel packed with migrants. As they close in, a Coast Guard officer shouts, “manos arriba” Spanish for “hands up”and the migrants on board comply, raising their arms as officers shine bright lights on them.
The vessel was initially spotted by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations patrol aircraft, which alerted the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard Cutter Haddock was dispatched, and its crew successfully intercepted the boat.
All 20 adults on board—17 men and 3 women—were taken into custody. The migrants, said to be from Mexico and China, were brought to Sector San Diego and handed over to Border Patrol personnel at the Imperial Beach Station. This interception comes as President Donald Trump intensifies efforts to crack down on illegal immigration, signing an executive order to stop taxpayer money from going to undocumented migrants.
The executive order, signed on Wednesday, aims to safeguard federal benefits for American citizens in need, including veterans and individuals with disabilities, while cutting off access to public benefits for illegal immigrants. The order also targets the misuse of taxpayer resources, which Trump claims was exacerbated by the previous administration’s border policies.
