President Biden Says Dead New Orleans Terror Suspect ‘Inspired’ By ISIS, Posted Video About Islamic Terror Group Hours Before Attack That Killed 15 (Video)
President Joe Biden addressed the American people on Wednesday in a short press briefing about the horrible terror attack that took place in New Orleans. The attack, which involved a vehicle, has claimed the lives of 15 people, and the suspect was shot and killed after a confrontation with the police.
“I’m sure I speak for all Americans when I say our hearts go out to the people of New Orleans after this terrible attack that happened early this morning,” Biden said in his remarks, which he made from Camp David.
Authorities discovered an ISIS flag in the vehicle used by the attacker, who drove into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street during the New Year’s celebration. The president said that the FBI had informed him that the suspect, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas, had posted videos on social media just hours before the attack, expressing his desire to kill and showing that he was influenced by ISIS.
“The FBI told me that just hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media where he expressed being inspired by ISIS and wanting to kill,” Biden explained. “The ISIS flag was found in his vehicle, which he had rented to carry out this attack. In addition to the explosives found in the vehicle, there were more explosives discovered nearby. The situation is still developing, and the investigation is at an early stage.”
Despite this, President Biden emphasized that people should not make assumptions about the incident yet.
He also mentioned that investigators do not believe the suspect, an Army veteran, acted alone in the attack.
Here is what Biden said in more detail:
“I believe I speak for all Americans when I say our hearts are with the people of New Orleans after this awful attack. To the families of those who were killed, to the people who were injured, and to all the people of New Orleans: we are grieving with you. Our nation is grieving with you. We are standing with you as you mourn and as you heal in the weeks ahead.
I want to express my thanks to the first responders and law enforcement officers who stopped the attacker before he could hurt or kill even more people. I also want to thank the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, and the FBI for their hard work on this case. The FBI is leading the investigation to understand what happened, why it happened, and if there are any ongoing threats to public safety.
Here is what we know so far: The FBI reported that the attacker was an American citizen who was born in Texas. He served in the U.S. Army for many years, and he also served in the Army Reserve until recently.
The FBI also informed me that, just hours before the attack, the suspect posted videos on social media in which he said he was inspired by ISIS and wanted to kill. These videos showed his dangerous intentions.
The ISIS flag was found in the vehicle he rented to carry out the attack. There were also explosives found in the vehicle, and more explosives were discovered nearby. The situation is still developing, and the investigation is just getting started.
At this time, intelligence and law enforcement agencies are continuing to search for any links or possible accomplices who may have been involved in the attack. We don’t have any new information to share right now, but the investigation is ongoing.
I’ve given orders to my Attorney General, the FBI Director, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and others to continue working on this issue until we have all the information. Once we know everything, I will share it with the public.
We are also looking into a separate incident involving the explosion of a Cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. Law enforcement is investigating if there is any connection between this explosion and the attack in New Orleans, but we don’t have any new information on that yet.
I’ve made sure that all necessary resources are being provided to local, state, and federal law enforcement to help complete the investigation in New Orleans quickly and to make sure there is no further threat to the safety of the American people.
We will stand by the people of New Orleans as they begin the difficult work of healing. New Orleans is a special city, full of culture and joy, and it’s loved by many people around the world because of its rich history, its unique culture, and, most of all, its incredible people.
While this attack was a terrible crime, I know that the spirit of New Orleans will not be broken. The people of New Orleans have always shown great strength in difficult times, and I know they will continue to do so in the days and weeks ahead. May God bless the people of New Orleans, may God bless our police and first responders, and may God watch over our troops. We will keep you fully updated as more information comes in. Thank you.”
