NHS issues urgent vaccination warning for millions

England’s top health expert is urging people to get their spring Covid-19 booster shot, especially those who are most at risk. Even though the weather has been warm and sunny lately, health officials are warning that this doesn’t mean the virus has gone away. Covid-19 is still a serious illness, and people who are older or have weaker immune systems could get very sick if they catch it. That’s why the NHS is encouraging everyone who is eligible to get their vaccine as soon as possible.

Right now, around 7.3 million people in England qualify for the spring booster. These include people aged 75 and over and those with health conditions that weaken their immune system. So far, 3 million people have already taken the jab since the program started last month, but many more are still being asked to come forward.

Professor Sir Stephen Powis, who is the medical director of NHS England, said people should not be fooled by the warm spring sunshine. Just because the weather feels like summer doesn’t mean the virus is gone. Covid-19 can still spread and cause serious problems, especially for those in high-risk groups. He explained that the protection people got from earlier vaccines can fade over time, so it’s important to get a booster to stay protected.

He also made it clear that you don’t need to wait for an official invitation to book your appointment. If you know you’re eligible, you can go ahead and book now. You can do this easily online through the NHS website, use the NHS App, or just call 119 to make your booking.

So far, the NHS has sent out more than 9.7 million messages reminding people about the spring booster. These reminders have been sent by text, email, letter, and through the NHS App. NHS teams are also visiting care homes across the country to give the vaccine directly to elderly residents who may not be able to go out to get it themselves.

Ashley Dalton, the Minister for Public Health and Prevention, said that the Covid vaccine is still a key tool in keeping vulnerable people safe. She said it’s very important that anyone who qualifies gets the jab to strengthen their protection. She also reminded everyone that the vaccine is completely free and available at thousands of places across the country. You can get it at your local GP practice or nearby pharmacy, making it easy and convenient for everyone.

Even though things may seem calmer now, Covid-19 hasn’t disappeared. That’s why health officials are working hard to make sure people stay protected, especially those who are more likely to get seriously ill if they catch the virus. The spring booster is a simple but important step to help keep yourself and others safe.
