Meghan Markle criticized for “appalling” actions after reportedly taking legal steps over daughter’s name

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have faced criticism after a new royal book claimed that Queen Elizabeth was very upset with their choice of name for their daughter.

According to a royal expert, Meghan had “copyrighted” the name Lilibet before her daughter was even born. This expert criticized the couple following claims in the book that Queen Elizabeth was furious after they said she had allowed them to use her personal nickname for their daughter.

Queen Elizabeth first got the nickname “Lilibet” as a child when she couldn’t pronounce “Elizabeth” properly. Her grandfather, King George V, started calling her Lilibet, copying her way of saying her own name, and the nickname stayed.

In the book Charles III: New King, New Court, The Inside Story by Robert Hardman, which was partly shared in the Daily Mail, an aide said that the Queen was “as angry as I’d ever seen her” when, in 2021, Harry and Meghan announced they had her permission to name their daughter “Lilibet.

At the time, reports suggested that Queen Elizabeth was informed about the name but felt she couldn’t say no, while the BBC reported that a Palace source claimed she wasn’t asked at all. Harry and Meghan’s lawyers sent legal letters to the BBC and others, saying this claim was false, while their spokesperson insisted they had spoken to the Queen.

Hardman also reported that Queen Elizabeth supposedly told Palace staff, “I don’t own the palaces or the paintings, only my name, and now they’ve taken that too.”

Royal writer Angela Levin criticized Harry and Meghan for upsetting the Queen and called their actions “appalling.” She told GB News that the Queen felt hurt partly because it was discovered that Meghan, before Lilibet was born, had secured the rights to the name to use for products or identification.

Eamonn Holmes, the presenter, asked, “What do you mean? They copyrighted the name?”

To which Levin responded: “Yes.” She further added that she found it a “very disrespectful” move by Harry and Meghan and stated: “It’s Meghan trying to get her own back because she hated the fact that she wasn’t treated as she felt she should have been in the Royal Family.”
