Man Who Won £11 Million Lottery Bought Houses for Friends but Lost Contact with Them, Now Feels Regret
A man who won £11 million in the lottery says his life hasn’t been as happy as people might think.
Mark Gardiner, who shared a £22.6 million jackpot with a friend, says that having so much money has made it hard to trust people and ruined some of his closest relationships.
Mark became famous after the big win and used part of his money to treat himself. He bought a home in Barbados, a Harley-Davidson motorbike, two Mercedes cars, and even became the owner of two football clubs. He made the most of his winnings, living a lifestyle many people only dream of.
But Mark wasn’t just focused on himself—he wanted to help others too. He spent £500,000 buying houses for five of his friends.
He believed he was doing something kind and generous, but it didn’t work out the way he hoped. Over time, all five friends stopped talking to him. Now, he says none of them are part of his life anymore.
Mark admitted that winning such a huge amount of money has brought him more problems than he expected. “There are days when I curse my win and wish it never happened,” he said. He also shared that he has lost touch with some of his family members and even Paul Maddison, the friend he split the jackpot with.
In an interview, Mark explained how the money has changed his relationships. “I bought houses for five friends, thinking it would make them happy.
But do they still talk to me? No. None of them. Having this much money has made me suspicious of why people are nice to me. I can’t help but wonder what they really want.”
Mark also revealed that strangers have started asking him for money. He receives letters from people he doesn’t know, asking for financial help.
All of this has made him feel like life would have been better if he had won a smaller amount. “Sometimes, I wish I’d won just enough to live comfortably. I enjoy going places where no one knows who I am. It feels good to just be a normal person again,” he said.
Mark’s story shows that winning the lottery isn’t always the dream come true that people imagine. For him, it brought a mix of good times and unexpected challenges, especially in his relationships with others.
