King Charles will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his Sandringham estate on Sunday. This comes after Zelensky’s heated argument with former U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance at the White House.
The meeting at the Oval Office on Friday turned tense when Trump accused Zelensky of risking “World War Three” and told him to be more grateful for U.S. support. The argument raised concerns about worsening relations between the U.S. and Europe, leaving Ukraine uncertain about future American assistance in its fight against Russia.
King Charles has previously expressed strong support for Ukraine, calling Russia’s invasion an “unprovoked attack.”
Ukraine had entered the White House meeting hoping to sign a mineral deal with the U.S., which could have paved the way for peace talks. However, the deal fell through, and Zelensky faced criticism from Trump and Vance for what they saw as a lack of appreciation for past U.S. aid.
The fallout was welcomed by Moscow, which saw it as a sign of weakening U.S.-Ukraine ties.
Despite the tension, Zelensky later posted on X (formerly Twitter), thanking the U.S., Trump, Congress, and the American people for their support.
Before meeting King Charles, Zelensky will meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday. Starmer will also host a defence summit for European leaders on Sunday.
