The Prime Minister has said the UK is “ready and willing” to send troops to Ukraine. In response, Shadow Home Office Minister Alicia Kearns has called for increased defence spending. She spoke to GB News, pointing out that the UK currently spends about 2.3% of its GDP on defence but needs to reach a target of 2.5%.
Kearns compared the UK’s spending to the US, which spends around 3.4% of its GDP on defence. She stressed that the UK faces clear threats, especially with the ongoing war in Europe, and it’s the government’s responsibility to ensure the country’s safety.
She also said that if troops are sent overseas, more investment in the army will be needed, as current focus has been on the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, which protect the UK’s shores.
Kearns expressed doubts about the Prime Minister’s plan to send troops to Ukraine, calling it “premature.” She noted that Russia has recently gained more territory in Ukraine, taking an additional 600 kilometres. She warned that simply stopping the fighting isn’t enough and that any deal must ensure Europe’s safety from Russia, which she described as an “imperialist terrorist state.”
Kearns emphasized that defence spending should be a top priority, especially given the current threats. She believes the UK needs to invest more in defence to protect itself and support its allies.
