Keir Starmer’s government has revamped the media briefing room at 10 Downing Street, spending £80,000 to replace the “Tory blue” design introduced under the previous administration. Before-and-after pictures shared on X (formerly Twitter) show the updates made after Labour’s win in last year’s General Election.
TV presenter Rylan Clark, known for This Morning, commented on the cost, saying: “We’d do this in a Big Brother task room for about £200.” His remark drew mixed reactions online.
One user pointed out that £200 wouldn’t cover expenses like lighting, set design, and materials, while another questioned the high price, writing: “£80k for a lick of paint??” A third added, “Government officials are seriously out of touch.”
The media room was originally built during Boris Johnson’s time as Prime Minister, costing £2.6 million. At the time, the Cabinet Office defended the spending, saying it served the public interest by improving transparency and accountability.
Meanwhile, BrewDog boss James Watt has voiced concerns about the Labour Government’s policies, specifically the rise in National Insurance contributions. Speaking to Express.co.uk, he warned that the changes could lead to a recession, saying, “It’s making it harder for businesses to hire, invest, and grow.”
Watt explained that the new taxes have forced BrewDog to divert millions that would have been used to expand and create jobs. He added, “This is affecting every business, and I think the UK is on the verge of a recession.”
