The Prince and Princess of Wales have faced an incredibly challenging year, marked by personal trials and public scrutiny. However, royal expert Jennie Bond believes that the couple has emerged stronger than ever, demonstrating remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.
The year took a devastating turn when Princess Kate was diagnosed with cancer, a revelation that deeply affected her husband, Prince William.
In a rare and candid television interview, former royal aide Jason Knauf, who served as press secretary to William, Kate, Harry, and Meghan from 2015 to 2019, shared a moving insight into the emotional toll the diagnosis had on William.
Knauf described it as “the lowest” he had ever seen the prince, recalling a personal phone call they had after the double blow of Kate’s and King Charles’ cancer diagnoses. “Within a couple of weeks, you find out that both your wife and your father have cancer… It was awful, absolutely awful,” Knauf said. “It’s the lowest I’ve ever seen him.”
The news came as a profound shock to the royal family, and William openly reflected on the difficulty of the past year, describing 2024 as “brutal” and the “hardest” of his life during a visit to South Africa. Royal expert Jennie Bond echoed these sentiments, noting that the dual diagnoses must have taken a significant emotional toll on William.
“Although William has told us that last year was brutal, we’ve only been able to imagine his despair when the call came through to tell them Catherine had cancer,” Bond said. “But now Jason Knauf has brought home the reality of the situation, recounting how he had never seen William so down. It was clearly a really shocking day for them.”
Kate, who underwent abdominal surgery in January 2024, revealed her cancer diagnosis in a heartfelt statement on March 22. She emphasized the importance of processing the news privately for the sake of their young family, particularly their three children: Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.
This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” Kate said.
She explained that it took time to recover from surgery and begin treatment, but most importantly, it took time to explain the situation to their children in an age-appropriate way and reassure them that she would be okay.
After completing chemotherapy, Kate shared a poignant reflection on the experience, stating, “Life as you know it can change in an instant, and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.
Bond noted that such an experience inevitably changes a person’s perspective on life. “I don’t think anyone is ever the same after an experience with cancer,” she said. “William and Catherine must now cherish even more every single day that they spend together and with their children.
Catherine has spoken about how something like this changes your whole perspective on life and makes you feel more vulnerable.”
Despite the challenges, Bond believes that the couple has emerged stronger than ever. “It certainly seems to me that they have come through it as an even stronger couple—and they were already a strong and extremely loving couple,” she said.
The film Catherine narrated at the end of her treatment was defined by the love and support they showed for one another and for their children.”
Kate has gradually returned to royal duties, prioritizing family life while continuing to engage with the public. Recent appearances, such as her joint engagement with William in Wales, where they made Welsh cakes ahead of St. David’s Day, have been met with joy and enthusiasm from the public. Bond observed, “Catherine is looking fantastic and looks as if she is enjoying every engagement.
It certainly seems to me that she has got her mojo back and, although we are told this is still a gradual return to royal duties, we are seeing more of her than many of us expected so early in the year. Moreover, the welcome she’s getting wherever she goes must make her realise that she is the star of the royal family.”
As Kate and William continue to navigate their roles with grace and resilience, their journey serves as a testament to the strength of their bond and their commitment to each other and their family.
