A large illegal rave that took place in a forest area called Charlton Wood, near Chichester in West Sussex, has caused major disruption, leading to the closure of the A286 road.
Police were alerted early on Sunday morning that people were heading to the area for an unlicensed music event. Officers quickly responded by locating the site and taking steps to stop more people from joining the event.
Police blocked roads leading to the rave and positioned officers at the scene. According to one witness, there were hundreds of cars parked along country roads. Although police originally estimated around 3,000 people were at the event, they later removed that number from social media.
Aerial photos seem to show fewer people than the initial estimate, but the scene was still busy, with at least one person seen in handcuffs inside a police van.
Superintendent Shane Baker, who is overseeing the situation, explained that their main focus is keeping everyone safe — both the local community and the people attending the event.
He said that officers are trying to find and speak with the organisers of the illegal rave. They are also watching for any crimes, including road traffic violations, and will take action where necessary.
Superintendent Baker acknowledged that the situation is affecting people living nearby and thanked them for their patience and understanding while the police work to shut down the gathering safely.
This time of year is known for illegal outdoor raves. Similar events in other parts of the UK have caused major issues in the past. For example, during Easter last year, two raves in Exmoor attracted hundreds and caused heavy traffic. In another case, about 1,000 people were forced to leave an abandoned store in Bristol during a Halloween event, and two people were arrested.
Police have warned that the organisers of these types of gatherings act irresponsibly, and they are prepared to act quickly to protect public safety and reduce disruption.
