Horror as schoolgirl, 12, ‘passed around like a trophy by more than a dozen boys’ as migrant boyfriend convicted

A horrific child sexual abuse case in Vienna has left Austria reeling as the first perpetrator faces consequences for crimes described as treating a 12-year-old girl “like a trophy.” The convicted 18-year-old Afghan migrant, who was 15 at the time of the abuse, received just 15 months probation despite admitting to multiple offenses.
The case involves at least 17 suspects aged 14-19 from various nationalities who allegedly participated in systematically abusing the victim across multiple locations in Vienna. Disturbing details emerged in court, including that the abuse was filmed and shared, with one perpetrator callously bragging about it on social media. The convicted attacker shockingly claimed he believed sex with a 12-year-old was legal, telling the court: “I thought if she was 12 and I was 15, it was allowed.”
Other suspects have made similarly outrageous claims, arguing the victim appeared older or that the acts were consensual – defenses that resulted in one 16-year-old Syrian suspect being fully acquitted of rape charges last October. Two other alleged perpetrators avoided prosecution entirely by being under Austria’s age of criminal responsibility.
The light sentencing has sparked public outrage and renewed debates about Austria’s legal protections for child victims. Critics argue the justice system failed to deliver appropriate consequences for what appears to be an organized pattern of predatory behavior. As investigations continue, authorities are pursuing charges related to both the sexual abuse and creation of child sexual abuse material.
This tragic case has raised difficult questions about migrant integration, juvenile justice reform, and society’s responsibility to protect vulnerable children. With several suspects still awaiting trial, many Austrians are watching closely to see whether justice will ultimately be served for the young victim.
