A heartbreaking accident early Tuesday morning has left a family devastated after their vehicle was swept away by floodwaters along US-75. One person has been confirmed dead, and an 8-year-old girl is still missing as search efforts continue into their second day.

The crash occurred when a white Chevrolet Traverse, carrying six people, was caught in fast-moving waters near the US-75 service road, just before Houston Street. The vehicle was dragged southward by the floodwaters before coming to a stop. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and managed to rescue four people from the vehicle. They were taken to Sherman Medical Center for medical attention.

Sadly, two people remained unaccounted for after the accident. Search teams worked tirelessly throughout Tuesday, and by the afternoon, they recovered one body. However, the search for the missing 8-year-old girl continued late into the night.

City spokesperson Nate Strauch explained that multiple rescue teams, including Texas Task Force 2, were involved in the search. They focused their efforts on Post Oak Creek, where the vehicle had been swept away. The crews searched throughout the night using specialized equipment and flashlights to comb the area. By Wednesday morning, the search expanded further, reaching outside Sherman into nearby creeks like Choctaw Creek and other surrounding areas.

Sherman Police provided an update to News 12, sharing that searchers had covered nearly seven miles of the creek by Wednesday afternoon.

Despite their best efforts, they had not yet located the missing girl. “We are now focusing on areas outside the city where we haven’t looked yet,” police said. They also confirmed the search would continue until sunset and resume at first light on Thursday.

The family involved in the crash was traveling from Durant to McKinney at the time of the accident, according to police.

While the names and ages of those involved have not been released, the tragedy has shaken the local community. Rescue teams and volunteers remain hopeful as they work around the clock to bring closure to the grieving family.
