Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is facing urgent calls to stop the UK’s renewable energy expansion after a disturbing discovery in the United States. Hidden inside American solar farms, experts found Chinese-made components that could act as secret “kill switches.
These devices, buried in the systems that help solar energy connect to the power grid, can reportedly be controlled from a distance. That means, in the worst-case scenario, someone outside the country possibly even the Chinese government could shut down parts of the electricity supply without warning.
This has triggered major concerns about national security. The parts in question were found inside power inverters, which are necessary for turning solar energy into electricity that powers homes and businesses. These inverters included cellular radios, which could be used to shut off the equipment remotely. While the Chinese companies that made them have not been named, the fear is that if they can be controlled remotely, then the West’s power systems could be vulnerable to outside attacks.
In the UK, Shadow Energy Minister Andrew Bowie has demanded an immediate pause in the renewable energy programme. He wants the government to check whether similar Chinese-made components have already been installed in UK solar farms. He said this discovery should set off alarm bells for Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and warned that relying too heavily on Chinese products for clean energy is a serious risk to the country’s safety.
Bowie also reminded the public that security experts had already raised concerns about possible spying technology in Chinese-made wind turbines being used in the UK. Now, with China playing such a huge role in solar energy, these new findings are even more troubling.
A government spokesperson responded by saying that the UK’s energy sector is subject to the highest level of security checks and that they would never allow anything to threaten national safety. Still, the pressure is growing, as it becomes clear that Chinese companies dominate the global market for power inverters. Research shows that companies like Huawei and Sungrow controlled more than half of the market in 2023. That means a large part of the UK’s and Europe’s solar energy infrastructure could already be in Chinese hands.
Chris Hewett, the head of Solar Energy UK, said that any risky components, if found, could be replaced quickly. He added that solar energy is still important because it helps the UK move away from using fossil fuels from unstable countries. However, he didn’t deny that this is a serious issue.
Industry insiders say British solar farms use equipment from many sources, including China. That’s why there’s growing concern that the UK might unknowingly be relying on technology that could be turned against it.
To make things worse, this isn’t the first warning. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Defence raised concerns about a Chinese firm that was chosen to supply wind turbines to a Scottish wind farm. All of this has led to one big question: Is the UK rushing into green energy without properly checking where the technology comes from and whether it’s safe?
Some experts believe that the UK and other European countries may have given away too much control over their electricity systems. By using so many Chinese-made parts, they could be setting themselves up for future blackouts, cyber-attacks, or even political threats.
As the UK continues to push forward with its clean energy plans, the calls to investigate and protect the country’s energy grid are growing louder. Many now fear that the green revolution could be hiding a silent threat — one that might only be revealed when it’s too late.
