Thee Secretary of State addressed concerns over last week’s power outage at Heathrow Airport, which disrupted flights after a substation fire. The incident sparked fears about whether the UK’s push for green energy and net-zero policies could risk the reliability of critical transport systems.

“Mr. Speaker, with permission, I wish to make a statement regarding the power outage caused by a substation fire that impacted Heathrow Airport operations on Friday, the 21st of March,” the minister began.

Following questions from MPs, one member pressed for assurance: “Can the Secretary of State give us an absolute assurance that nothing in our drive towards green energy and net zero will ever affect the sustainability and safety of our vital transport systems?”

The minister responded firmly: “I can give the Honorable Gentleman that assurance.” He also dismissed claims from some MPs who had linked the incident to renewable energy policies, calling them “myths.”

“I am very aware that there were some other Honorable Members of this House who aren’t present in the chamber today who were busy peddling some myths on Friday morning about this issue,” he said. “It was very clear to me that the backup power supplies at Heathrow consist of both diesel and electric generators. No matter what some other Honorable Members might be saying, those systems did work.”

The government maintains that the transition to cleaner energy will not compromise infrastructure resilience. Heathrow’s backup systems successfully prevented further disruption, proving that safety measures remain robust.
