Donald Trump shares urgent message to Canadians about ‘51st state’ as voting begins in crucial election

Donald Trump has often talked about the idea of Canada becoming America’s 51st state, and now he’s brought it up again just as Canadians are voting in a major election.

Trump posted an urgent message on his platform, Truth Social, urging Canadians to think about his idea as they head to the polls to choose their next prime minister. Right now, Mark Carney, who only became prime minister six weeks ago after replacing Justin Trudeau, is facing a tough election against the Conservative Party’s Pierre Poilievre.

Not long ago, Poilievre’s party had a huge 25-point lead in the polls. But since Carney took over the Liberal Party, he has managed to close the gap, making the election extremely competitive. It’s now so close that no one can predict who will win. Some believe that Trump’s involvement could even tip the scales in one direction — something being called the “Trump effect.”

Trump, who is the 47th President of the United States, had earlier put tariffs on Canadian goods. But he said that if Canada agreed to become the 51st U.S. state, all those tariffs would disappear. He added that Canada would become “one of the greatest states anywhere,” and that the U.S. and Canada together would form a “visually incredible” country.

He explained that the separation between the two countries was only because someone had once drawn an “artificial line” through the land. As part of his offer, Trump promised that Canada could even keep its national anthem, “O Canada,” if it joined the United States. He said he loved the anthem and thought it was perfect.

Trump’s message to Canadians on voting day was clear: he urged them to elect a leader who would cut taxes in half, boost military strength to the highest levels in the world at no extra cost, and allow Canadian industries like cars, steel, aluminum, lumber, and energy to grow four times larger — but only if Canada became part of the U.S. He said if Canada joined, there would be no tariffs, no taxes, no borders, and “only positives with no negatives.” He insisted that America could no longer afford to financially support Canada unless the country officially became a U.S. state.

However, Pierre Poilievre quickly fired back at Trump’s comments, warning him to stay out of Canadian politics. Poilievre made it clear that only Canadians will decide Canada’s future at the ballot box, not outsiders. He firmly stated that Canada will always be proud, independent, and sovereign — and will never become the 51st U.S. state. Poilievre encouraged Canadians to vote for change so that the country could stand on its own two feet and deal with the United States from a position of strength.

Mark Carney has not yet responded to Trump’s remarks.
