President Donald Trump spoke at the White House on Tuesday evening and strongly criticized the courts for blocking parts of his immigration policies. He said these policies are meant to remove dangerous individuals from the country—people he described as killers, drug dealers, and criminals. He believes the legal system is getting in the way of removing these people quickly and safely.
Trump claimed that his administration has done a good job stopping illegal immigration and closing the border, saying that very few people are now entering the country illegally. But he warned that some court decisions are making it harder for him to carry out deportations and protect the U.S.
He mentioned that the system wasn’t designed to handle the large number of people needing immigration trials and that the delays could make the country unsafe. Trump said thousands of people are ready to be deported, but judges are slowing things down by demanding trials, which could take years.
Since Trump returned to office in January, his executive actions have been challenged in court many times. Some judges have even blocked his orders nationwide. One big legal battle is coming up in May, when the Supreme Court will hear a case about Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants.
In another recent case, a federal judge temporarily stopped the administration from using an old law to deport gang members who are in the U.S. illegally. Trump warned that if judges keep interfering, it could lead to serious safety problems.
He also blamed President Biden’s time in office for allowing large numbers of people to enter the country. Trump claimed that many of them came from jails, mental institutions, and violent gangs in places like Venezuela and other countries—even as far as Africa. He said some governments were emptying their prisons and sending those people to the U.S.
Trump insisted he was elected to stop this and send such people back, but legal delays are preventing quick action. He warned that if deportations are blocked for years due to court procedures, the U.S. could become very dangerous.
Switching topics, Trump talked about the ongoing trade dispute with China. He said it’s up to China to agree to a fair deal if it wants to keep trading with the U.S. He made it clear that the U.S. is in control and will decide the terms of any deal. While he expects the very high tariffs on Chinese goods to be lowered eventually, he said they won’t go back to zero.
He criticized past trade deals that allowed China to benefit too much, claiming they used the money to build up their military. Trump said he has a good relationship with Chinese President Xi and expects both countries to eventually find a way to work together peacefully and profitably.
During a Q&A session, Trump also addressed rumors about firing Jerome Powell, the head of the Federal Reserve. He made it clear that he has no plans to remove Powell, despite some disagreements about interest rates. Trump said he believes now is a good time to lower rates and wishes Powell would take action, but even if he doesn’t, Trump said it’s not a major issue and he still supports him.
