Donald Trump sparked outrage after sharing a deeply offensive and racist video on his Truth Social account late on the night of February 6. The video, which runs just over a minute long, ends with former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama being shown as monkeys. The post appeared around midnight as part of a rapid series of messages the current president shared in a short space of time.
The video immediately drew heavy criticism, with many people calling it vile and unacceptable. Gavin Newsom’s press office issued a blunt response, calling the post “disgusting behavior by the President” and urging every Republican to publicly condemn it without delay. Critics said the video crossed a clear line and reflected long-standing racist attacks aimed at the Obamas.
This is not the first time Trump has used manipulated or artificial videos to target Barack Obama. Last July, he shared a fake video that showed Obama being arrested inside the Oval Office. That deepfake clip was also posted on Truth Social and was widely condemned for spreading misinformation and fueling hostility.
Around the same time as the racist video, Trump posted several other clips aimed at his political opponents. One post mocked what he called “crybaby Democrats,” using footage from one of his speeches where he told people who were unhappy with the country that they were free to leave. The tone of the post was dismissive and confrontational, continuing a familiar pattern in his online messaging.
Another video targeted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Trump shared footage showing piles of trash left out during a recent snowstorm on trash collection day, using it to criticize the city’s leadership. The clip focused on overflowing rubbish bags and framed the situation as an example of poor local governance.
Trump’s posting spree did not stop there. Early the next morning, he shared a post comparing himself and Melania Trump to Ronald and Nancy Reagan. The message claimed it was “beautiful” that the couple in the White House was truly in love and suggested that such a relationship had not been seen since the Reagan era. The repost included a fan-made video edited from old interviews of Trump and Melania together.
In addition to these posts, Trump also took aim at CNN and reshared a clip from an interview he gave to NBC. In that interview segment, he spoke vaguely about a so-called “discombobulator,” claiming it had been used successfully in military missions. He refused to give details, saying only that it worked and that no soldiers were lost during its use.
Altogether, the late-night and early-morning posts painted a picture of a president once again using social media to provoke, insult opponents, and stir controversy, with the racist video involving the Obamas standing out as the most shocking and widely condemned of them all.
