Donald Trump has told almost one million migrants in the U.S. to leave right away or face serious consequences. These migrants had used an app, originally created under President Biden, to book appointments to ask for asylum in the country.
The app, called CBP One, was meant to help with legal entry, but Trump argued it allowed too many people to stay illegally. He shut the app down in January but later brought it back with a new purpose: to help migrants leave on their own. It was renamed CBP Home.
According to an email seen by the BBC, one migrant was told: “It’s time for you to leave the U.S. If you don’t go immediately, law enforcement might take action to remove you, unless you have a legal reason to stay.” The email also warned that people who don’t leave could face criminal charges, fines, or other legal penalties.
It’s unclear how many people got this message, but immigration officials confirmed that some of the nearly one million CBP One users were contacted.
Around 900,000 migrants used the app to enter through the southern U.S. border. Most were allowed to stay for two years and work legally. The app was first launched in 2020 to help trucking companies, but in 2023 it was updated to help migrants make asylum appointments.
Many Republicans criticized the app, saying it made it easier for people to enter the country before their asylum claims were properly checked. But officials argued that it helped manage the border better and kept asylum seekers safer during their journey.
The Department of Homeland Security accused the Biden administration of using its authority in the wrong way, saying it led to a record-breaking border crisis. They said cancelling these permissions shows a commitment to secure the border and protect national security. Migrants who don’t leave might be fined $998 for every day they overstay after getting their final deportation notice.
However, this rule doesn’t apply to some Ukrainians and Afghans who are under special immigration programs.
