Disgusting!’ Rachel Reeves scolded for welfare benefit cuts in Spring Statement: ‘She doesn’t command respect’

On Wednesday, the Chancellor revealed that the government will cut £4.8 billion in the Spring Statement.

Rachel Reeves announced that billions would be cut from welfare benefits, and former Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker called the move “disgusting.”

Reeves told Parliament that Labour supports people working and believes those who can’t work should still get proper help.

According to the government’s own report, over three million families will be affected by the new changes.

Norman Baker criticized Reeves during an interview on GB News, saying the cuts are unfair and that the government should focus on making rich billionaires pay more taxes instead of targeting people who are struggling.

He suggested raising the digital services tax and going after the profits of big banks. Instead, he said, the government is reducing support for people with disabilities, which he finds unacceptable.

Baker also warned that these new policies are bad for both individual people and the overall economy. He said because taxes are going up and people will have less money to spend, it will hurt the economy.

Commentator Alex Armstrong agreed with Baker, saying the budget looks like something the Conservative Party would create, not Labour. He said it could lead to another period of heavy spending cuts, known as austerity.

Armstrong added that this isn’t what voters were promised and called the new budget a “disaster.”

In response, Baker said he believes Rachel Reeves is not strong enough in her position and doesn’t have the respect needed to be a good Chancellor.
