Democratic Party Megadonor Says He’s Unsure If Trump Is ‘Stable’ but Calls Him a ‘Genius’

John Morgan, a longtime Democratic donor, told Politico on Sunday that while he wasn’t sure about President-elect Donald Trump’s stability, he believed Trump was a “genius” for winning the 2024 election.

Morgan has supported Democrats like President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Florida ballot initiatives in the past. Despite leaving the Democratic Party in recent years, he continues to back some of its candidates and causes. Speaking to Politico about the party’s struggles after last month’s election, Morgan shared his thoughts on Trump’s victory and the perception of Democrats as “toxic.”

Morgan, a Florida-based fundraiser for Biden, is considering running for governor under a new party he’s calling the “Capitalist Party.” He switched from Democrat to independent a few years ago, criticizing the party’s far-left wing and self-described “Democratic socialists.” Morgan, who supported raising Florida’s minimum wage, says he would campaign as a “compassionate capitalist” and believes Florida could become the birthplace of a strong third party.

Commenting on Trump, who once called himself a “stable genius,” Morgan praised his political strategy. “I don’t know if Trump is a stable genius, but he’s a genius,” Morgan said. “He tapped into Republican anger and populism in a way no one else did.”

Open Secrets reports that Morgan’s law firm, Morgan & Morgan, has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democrats, including Kamala Harris. However, Morgan recently made headlines by saying Harris should be “disqualified forever” from holding office. He told NewsNation host Chris Cuomo that Harris and the Democrats mishandled $1.5 billion during the election, leading to their loss.

Using a “Mad Max” analogy, Morgan explained, “It was like the end of the world—everyone just doing whatever they wanted. Ad buyers, talent, consultants—it was chaos. The money didn’t flow in for Harris; it flowed in against Trump. Most people who supported Harris were really voting to stop Trump.”
