CNN’s Jake Tapper Asks Mitt Romney if He’s Worried Trump Might Target Him or His Family for Revenge (Video)
CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Senator Mitt Romney on Sunday if he was worried about becoming a target for revenge if President-elect Donald Trump decided to use the government to go after his enemies after taking office.
Romney, who is well-known for his public disagreements with Trump, said he wasn’t afraid. He explained that he had lived an honest and clean life, so he had nothing to worry about.
During the interview on CNN’s *State of the Union*, Tapper mentioned how Trump has strongly criticized the members of the House select committee that investigated the January 6 Capitol attack.
Trump has even suggested that those committee members deserve to be jailed. Tapper then asked Romney, “Are you worried that Trump might target you or your family for revenge?”
Romney responded calmly, saying, “No, I’m not worried at all. I’ve lived a clean life, so I don’t think I’ll face any criminal investigations. Also, I’m not sure how serious President Trump is about some of his comments.
During the past campaigns, he often talked about who should or shouldn’t be jailed, but nothing much came of it. I think he’ll focus more on the future. Yes, if anyone has committed actual crimes, they’ll be prosecuted, but I think those cases are rare.”
Later in the interview, Romney took a moment to congratulate Trump on winning the election.
He said it was an impressive achievement, something he wasn’t able to accomplish when he ran as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate in 2012.
Romney also made history in February 2020 when he became the first senator in U.S. history to vote to convict a president from his own political party.
During Trump’s second impeachment trial, Romney joined Democrats in voting to remove Trump from office. He said his decision was based on the seriousness of Trump’s actions.
Romney explained his reasoning by saying, “Trying to interfere with or corrupt an election just to stay in office is one of the most abusive and harmful violations of a president’s oath of office. It’s something I can’t support or ignore.”
