Big Trouble for Migrants as Keir Starmer Drops Bombshell Update That Will Affect Them (Video)

Keir Starmer has announced new plans to change the UK’s immigration system. He said the rules need to be much stricter and promised to close any gaps that are currently being taken advantage of. One of the big changes is that migrants will need to live in the UK for ten years before they can apply to become citizens. Also, everyone coming into the country will have to meet higher English language requirements.
The Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, will introduce changes to stop what she calls a “loophole” in the system. This comes after a Palestinian family of six from Gaza was recently allowed to settle in the UK while escaping the war in their homeland. Cooper wants to prevent similar cases from happening unless they go through the proper process.
Starmer says the updated immigration system will be fair but strict. It will allow people who help the country grow — like skilled workers — to come in, but will stop uncontrolled migration. He believes living in the UK should be seen as a privilege, not a right, and that migrants must make an effort to fit in and learn English.
Meanwhile, the Conservative Party has accused Starmer of trying to take credit for the recent drop in visa numbers, which they say happened because of their own changes made back in April 2024. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp mocked Labour for not setting a clear target on migration numbers, saying it shows they are not serious about controlling immigration. He claimed Starmer doesn’t support workers but instead gives in when it comes to these tough decisions.
The new whitepaper, which lays out Labour’s plans, confirms the 10-year rule for citizenship. However, it also suggests that people who are considered highly valuable to the country, such as doctors and nurses, might be allowed to become citizens sooner.
Yvette Cooper also announced that the UK will stop allowing care worker recruitment from overseas. She explained that the care visa rules will change so companies can’t just bring in workers from abroad. Instead, they’ll have to hire from the many people who are already in the UK on care visas — even though some of them came here for jobs that didn’t actually exist.
This move has upset many people in the care industry. Experts say the government is making a big mistake and that this change could make staffing problems in the care sector even worse.
